World System Theory: Contends that all nations are part of a worldwide economy and division of labor (Wallerstein, 2004)

Race and Ethnicity

Race: Socially constructed categories of people based on physiological differences

Racism: The belief that one’s race is superior to other races which are viewed as inferior (results in prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes)

Ethnicity: Categories of people based on social and cultural differences

Ethnocentrism: The belief that one’s culture is superior to other races that are viewed as inferior

Minority groups: Racial or ethnic groups set aside for differential and unequal treatment by a dominant group (refers to differences in power and not necessarily the size of the group)

Pluralism: When different racial and ethnic groups cooperate while maintaining separate identities

Assimilation: When minority groups lose some of their unique identities in order to conform to dominant group cultural patternsCharacteristics of a minority group: Ascribed status (usually do not choose to be part of the group)

Easily recognizable (identifiable characteristics that set them apart)

Group identity and cohesion (tend to feel sense of unity with each other)

Suffer from prejudice (preconceived negative attitudes), discrimination (negative actions), and stereotypes (oversimplified ideas about an entire category of people)
